Padman Akshay Kumar goes to the big screen with the support and blessing of Amitabh Bachchan

The movie is in news for all the good reasons. It is taking a social cause that no-one bothered to take in the past. A simple thing could be revolutionizing. The movie has started a debate over availability of sanitary pad for women in the rural areas and also questions are asked to branded firms why they don’t make cost effective but quality pads for poor customers of rural India and the world at large. Thanks to Arunachalam Muruganantham for inventing a mini machine that makes quality sanitary pads in one third of the cost of branded products.
Story of Arunachalam Muruganantham
Twinkle Khanna read the story of poor social worker, now Padma Sri awardee and also 100 Most Influential People in the World in the 2014 list of Time Magazine. She included his story in her bestselling book Legend of Lakshmi Prasad that is a collection of short stories on feminism. Impressed with the story of Arunachalam Muruganantham, Twinkle Khanna decided to make a movie on it.
Padman movie
It is biopic told in Bollywood style and Twinkle Khanna decided the movie to be a comedy drama instead of making a documentary like serious movie. The veteran film director and screenwriter R. Balki was selected for direction and the reason Twinkle Khanna gave for his selection is that she’s impressed with the way he handles sensitive issues.
The film stars as Akshay Kumar as Lakshmikant Chauhan (Arunachalam Muruganantham), Sonam Kapoor, Radhika Apte, Sudhir Pandey, Maya Alagh and Amitabh Bachchan in special appearance. Presence of Akshay Kumar and Sudheer Pandey shows that it is a comedy and Amitabh Bachchan is there to lay emphasis on the social message.
Story
Akshay Kumar would live the reel life of the real Padman Arunachalam Muruganantham. The story is related to the hygiene issues poor women in rural India face during mensural cycle. Akshay Kumar would show how painful the mensural cycle in in absence of quality sanitary pads and also he will invent low cost pad making machine to promote hygiene among illiterate and poor rural women.

Why Thursday release?
Padman was scheduled for release on the 26th Jan on Republic Day but the date is changed to 25th and the reason Twinkle Khanna gives for the change in date is “like periods a day before”.
Akshay Khanna is continuously taking important social issues through his films. Padman is his second initiative after Toilet Ek Prem Katha. What next?
