If it isn’t shot in Delhi, Mom would have met the fate of Maatr
Mom is shot in Delhi hence it reminds us the brutal 2012 gang rape called Nirbhaya. A 23 year old physiotherapy student was kidnapped on the chilling night of December 16; she was later found to be gang-raped and brutally murdered with rude weapons.
The Delhi, once called “Rape Capital” by former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, becomes live in the movie. As darkness sets in, its roads wear a haunted look and the streets become unknown for women. Where Maatr failed, Mom will be able to narrate story of lakhs of women living in Delhi.
Similarity with Nirbhaya
It is the story of a mom of two daughters. A teacher by profession, Sri Devi teaches her daughters in home and also at school. She keeps a close eye over her elder daughter Arya, who’s a teenager. One day, Arya was physically assaulted and kidnapped by a local goon. The emotional trauma Sri Devi goes through when her teenage daughter is kidnapped in Delhi reminds us the trauma of the mother of Nirbhaya.
Let’s come to the movie part
It is the 300th movie of Sri Devi and it can’t be a co-incidence that the movie is produced by her husband Boney Kapoor. Also Sri Devi is provided maximum screen space. The daughter Arya is created only to support Mom. The movie starts with a classroom scene where Sri Devi confiscates mobile phone of a student for he sent a porn video to a classmate who happens to be her daughter Arya. Sri Devi is stepmom of Arya but she loves her daughter from her heart. But Arya isn’t ready to accept her as mother.
Sri Devi represents millions of moms
What if your teenage daughter doesn’t turn up on time and you don’t have any clue about her whereabouts? This thought will run shivers down your spine, if you are in Delhi. Sri Devi portrays a Delhi mom and shows the courage and patience that Nirbhaya’s mother displayed throughout the trial.
Highlights of the movie:
• Nawazuddin Siddiqui in a never before getup of an inconclusive private detective
• Akshay Khanna relives the role of 2nd Lt. Dharamvir Singh of Border
• Dew fresh Sajal Ali is a new face for Indian cinema
• Adnan Siddiqui is also a fresh face for Bollywood
Mom fails on music front
Mom’s music is composed by two times Academy award winning composer AR Rahman but the music lacks the force for which the decorated composer is known for. Music won’t be a highlight of the movie and the song Kooke Kawn would fail to attract viewers despite the voice of Sukhwinder Singh. The only song praised by critics is “O Sona Tere Liye”. It is the title song of the movie.
