With Gujarat becoming the fourth state to ban Padmaavat Movie, will Bhansali think of a grand release for his magnum opus
With the countdown for release of the magnum opus of Sanjay Leela Bhansali Padmavat movie just begun and the stage set for the global IMAX 3D release of the movie, all eyes are on the state CMs especially BJP ruled states that are facing strict agitation from fringe groups especially the Karni Sena.
From Padmavati to Padmaavat
Padmavati was a legend in Rajasthani folklores. The beautiful queen of Chittor performed Jauhar (self-immolation) to prevent a cruel Muslim Delhi ruler from laying his dirty hands on her body. Her story was glorified by an epic poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi in 1540. Sanjay Leela Bhansali also tried to glorify the queen in Bollywood style but the story only created controversy. Finally Bhansali modified the movie to pacify the contesting groups but the modifications fail to pacify the contesting groups.
Release
The movie was originally scheduled to be released on December 1, 2017 but the release was deferred due to controversy that is in the center of the movie. According to the Karni Sena, Rani Padmavati is presented as a lover in the movie. Also it is alleged that she’s seen romancing with Alauddin Khalji, the Sultan of Delhi.
Finally the movie is set to release on January 25, 2018 but the agitating groups have retaliated with the threat to burn cinema halls, if the movie is released.
Let’s see the ground situation before the release
Rajasthan has already declared that the movie will be banned due to protests by the Karni Sena. Other BJP ruled states that followed Rajasthan are Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. Also there are news reports that Bihar CM Nitish Kumar has also decided not to release the movie in his state.
Situation in UP is ambiguous as the CM Adityanath Yogi hasn’t taken any stand on screening of the movie in his state. But Haryana CM ML Khattar has taken a clear stand on release of Padmaavat. He said that any decision on release of the picture will be taken only after watching the movie. It is only Himachal Pradesh CM Jairam Thakur that has allowed screening of the movie as scheduled.
Meanwhile the Karni Sena has warned the government to not to play with the sentiments of Rajasthani people. It has threatened nationwide agitation, if the movie is released with its present content. The situation isn’t ripe for screening of the movie and this has only worked in the favor of the movie.
